South Africa's most ambitious rail project is being realized. Already linking several key stations, South Africa's first high-speed railway signals a new beginning for Africa's railways. Upon completion Gautrain's three corridors will link Johannesburg, Pretoria, the region's international airport and intermediate stations.
After opening in time for the 2010 World Cup, the new Gautrain high-speed service brings a promise of continued growth to burgeoning Gauteng Province. Seen as a hedge against spiraling fuel prices, Gautrain promises relief for traffic-weary commuters long tied to private cars and an ad-hoc fleet of mini-bus taxis.
Rapid transit rail between Jo'burg and the airport is already in place. Frequent service links TO Tambo International Airport with Sandton -- Johannesburg's cutting edge commercial district. Gautrain also transports commuters between Sandton and its eastern suburbs. A north-south corridor, connecting Sandton with Tshwane (Pretoria), is slated to open in 2011.
