VIA's far-reaching service stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific; and from the 49th parallel to the sub-Arctic Territories. Otherwise inaccessible settlements and outposts rely on this Lake Superior-based railway for year-round access to the outside world. Scenic highlights along its its 296 miles/476 km run to Hearst, Ontario include Agawa Canyon, boreal forests and Canada's mountainous Shield.

A trio of First Nations (Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam, Kawawachikamach and Matimekush­ Lac John) jointly operate this 356 mi/588 km line. Twice weekly service travels via Emeril Junction, Labrador.
