Famous Tour Trains and Routes Through Australia New Zealand
GSR's Indian Pacfic sweeps the continent from Sydney and Adelaide to Perth.
nationwide
The Ghan - Great Southern Railway Adelaide, SA - Darwin, NT Named for the Afghan cameleers who hauled goods down the dusty trail that preceded it, today's Ghan is the direct descendent of the narrow-gauge train that commenced service between Adelaide and Alice Springs in 1929 . With the landmark Alice-to-Darwin segment's opening in 2004, the country' has realized its long-held dream for a north-south transcontinental line and the Ghan has followed; traversing the breadth of the nation in two nights. The Ghan offers two levels of service, off-train tours and motorail (car transport); connecting service to Adelaide from Melbourne and Sydney. The whole trip -- including the full range of amenities and extras -- is beautifully portrayed on the GSR website.
The Indian Pacific - Great Southern Railway Adelaide, SA Extending 4352km (2698m), overnight from Sydney to Adelaide and two more nights to Perth; the "Indian Pacific" crosses treeless Outback plains and lush Blue Mountains, traversing the world's longest stretch of straight track, on its coast-to-coast rail-trek. Optional off-train tours available for Kargoorlie, Broken Hill , the Nullabar and more.
