Four principal rail corridors radiate from the capital connecting Sydney with coastal and interior points including parts of two adjacent states and the Australian Capital Territory. Three XPT high-speed routes include Northcoast to Brisbane, West through the Blue Mountains to Dubbo, and South services to Melbourne; Xplorer service extends to Canberra, the Outback.

Australia's largest passenger rail service operates along three of the country's most important long-distance corridors. The Overland, links Melbourne and Adelaide; Indian Pacific, travels from Sydney to the Perth and the remote West coast; and The Ghan, connects Adelaide and Darwin via Alice Springs.Motorail facilities are available.

This railway's Perth-centric services include the speedy Australind to Bunbury, the scenic Prospector to Kargoolie and AvonLink dedicated commuter trains serving the Avon Valley and Merredin.

Main line rail service traces Queensland's northeast coast from Brisbane to Cairns with high-speed Tilt Train and Sunlander services. Other Brisbane services include Spirit of the Outback to Longreach and The Westlander to Charleville. The Inlander connects Townsville with Mt. Ida. Motorail facilities are available on The Sunlander and Spirit of the Outback.

Five main line rail services fan out from Melbourne: South West to Warmambool and the Shipwreck Coast; Western through the Victorian goldfields to Ararat via Ballarat; Northern via the Macedon Ranges and Bendigo; North East via Nagambie Lakes and Seymour; and East via Gippsland.

North Island's Overlander connects Auckland and Wellington; South Island rail services from Christchurch include TranzCoastal to Picton (with Ferry link to Wellington) and TranzAlpine, the most famous of New Zealand's scenic tran rides.
